Profile

Dr James D. Carswell has been Head of Spatial Information Technologies Research at the Digital Media Centre in TU Dublin since 2011. Dr Carswell’s academic credentials include a BTech in Survey Engineering (Ryerson), an MSc in Geodetic Science (Ohio State University), and a PhD in Spatial Information Science & Engineering (University of Maine).

For eight years, Dr Carswell worked throughout Europe as a GIS Analyst for Unisys, and as Digital Photogrammetry Program Manager at Intergraph European Headquarters in The Netherlands. Among his achievements are:

  • Principal Investigator of Enterprise Ireland (EI), for funded projects into Mobile Environmental Management Systems (MEMS), Cultural Heritage Interfaces (CHI), Managing GeoSpatial Imagery and Knowledge (MaGIK) and HEA-Strand3 funded Lok8 (locate) on ultrasonic indoor mobile positioning. DIT-PI of EU funded projects towards Archaeological Heritage New Accessibility (T.ARC.H.N. A) and Intelligent Cities for the Next Generation (ICiNG).
  • He is part of the Co-PI of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded project (StratAG) on 3D mobile sensor-web data mining.
  • He is an expert Reviewer for European Commission on FP6-FP7 ICT projects.
  • Past Chair of DIT Digital Arts and Media Research Group (DAMRG); Steering Committee of W2GIS conference.
  • Serves on the Program Committee of several international geospatial conferences.
  • An extensive publication record on web-based GIS, digital image correlation, digital photogrammetry, content-based image retrieval, and case-based reasoning. He has been received several awards for his work, including:
  • EU Future Internet Award for exemplary research in mobile sensor-web data mining (2010) by the European Future Internet Forum of Member States.
  • Altenhofen Memorial Scholarship for advanced photogrammetric research (1998) by American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS);
  • Numerous TUDublin/DIT, national, and EU research funding awards for web-based and mobile context/location-aware 3D modelling and querying of spatial datasets.

 

Lecturing Profile

Dr James Carswell is a Lecturer in Dynamic Web Development technologies (Java, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, MySQL) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is also a teaching assistant in Analytical and Digital Photogrammetry at graduate level in the USA.

Dr Carswell has developed and delivered on-site customer training and technical support for Intergraph GIS and Digital Photogrammetric mapping systems in Europe.
