Prof. Mary Robinson Launches TU Dublin's Pioneering Book on PR & Sustainability, celebrating 25 Years of PR Master's Excellence
On November 8th, Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its MA in Public Relations programme with a special event to launch a new book - Public Relations & the Sustainable Development Goals: Case Studies in Practice. The highlight of the evening will be an appearance by former President of Ireland and global sustainability champion Mary Robinson, who will join TU Dublin as the event’s esteemed guest.
The book, edited by TU Dublin academics Kevin Hora, Cliodhna Pierce, and Isaac Antwi-Boasiako, who each contribute a chapter, showcases 12 case studies written by students from the 25th MAPR cohort. Each study demonstrates how PR can be a force for positive change, aligning communications with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We are honoured to have Prof Mary Robinson join us for this celebration,” said Kevin Hora, Head of Journalism and Communications at TU Dublin, and the book’s lead editor. “Her voice as a tireless advocate for sustainability, justice and equality continues to resonate and inspire around the world, challenging each and every one of us to do likewise.”
TU Dublin’s School of Media, where the MA in Public Relations resides, is explicit in its mission ‘to link the cultural, technological and societal, to encourage debate, foster lifelong learning, produce imaginative, practical innovations and solutions, and give voice to the matters that impact on society.’
The book uses individual case studies to bring the SDGs to life; for example, SDG 1 (No Poverty) gives an examination of the Children’s Rights Alliance’s ‘End Child Poverty Week’ campaign, while SDG 5 (Gender Equality) looks at 'WorkEqual' in Ireland, examining women’s participation and decision-making roles in political, economic and public life. The book illustrates how advocates, both state and non-state actors, can leverage these PR paradigms with SDGs to enhance their communication strategies.
The launch event will take place on TU Dublin’s Grangegorman campus and will bring together public relations professionals, students, and sustainability advocates from across Ireland. Copies of Public Relations & the Sustainable Development Goals: Case Studies in Practice will be available for purchase at the event. The MA in Public Relations is the oldest PR degree programme in Ireland.
