Dr Aoife Connolly is a Lecturer in French at Technological University Dublin. Prior to joining TU Dublin, she held lectureship positions at Queen’s University Belfast, where she was Level 1 Beginners Convenor, Level 2 Convenor and Personal Tutor for French, and at University of Galway, where she was joint final-year co-ordinator for French. She also previously lectured at Université de Poitiers, France.
Aoife studied at University of Galway, where she completed a BA International in Spanish and French (1st Hons) alongside a Diploma in Irish (1st Hons), an MA in French (1st Hons) and a PhD in French. She has been the recipient of prizes and research funding such as a French government medal for proficiency in French awarded by the Senate of the National University of Ireland, a Lady Chryss O’Reilly scholarship, a Galway Doctoral Research Fellowship and an Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship.
Aoife’s primary research focus is French decolonisation, particularly as it relates to gender, memory, migration and identity. Her MA thesis (written in French) examined the role of women in the Algerian War and her PhD thesis analysed representations of the European settlers of Algeria in texts and on-screen. She is the author of a monograph entitled Performing the Pied-Noir Family: Constructing Narratives of Settler Memory and Identity in Literature and On-Screen (2020; reis., Lanham, MD: Lexington Books, 2022), and of book chapters and journal articles on subjects related to French empire and literary representations of (post)colonial identities.
Teaching areas
Aoife teaches French language and translation in addition to French and Francophone literature, film and culture (including the literature and film of decolonisation). Her teaching qualifications include a Teaching Diploma in Speech and Drama (London College of Music), a Higher Diploma in Education (1st Hons, University of Galway) and a Postgraduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching (TU Dublin). She has acted as an external examiner for Munster Technological University Cork.
Other activities: As a member of TU Dublin’s Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team (SAT), Aoife worked with SAT colleagues to successfully apply for an institutional Athena Swan award for the university. She is also an affiliate of TU Dublin’s Research Centre on Inclusive and Equitable Cultures.
