Ciarnad joined the university in 2010 as a full-time lecturer in Horticulture. She qualified in 1994 from UCD with a degree in Agricultural Science (Landscape Horticulture) and since then developed a wide experience in industry, particularly in tree production and sales, garden restoration, landscape management and adult/community education.
She managed large restoration projects in renowned historic gardens in Cork and Clare and went on to develop her own landscape consultancy practice that specialised in design and management proposals for commercial and private developments across the country.
In 2009, Ciarnad attained a BA (Hons) degree in Visual Art delivered by TU Dublin uniquely, by remote learning in Sherkin Island, West Cork and has exhibited in Cork, Dublin and Tipperary, her work is held in several private collections. Her visual art practice references nature and rural life while also engaging with local, community groups.
Her teaching specialties include plant use and identification, culinary and medicinal plants, biodiversity and landscape management. She provides opportunities for students to learn in real-world contexts, engaged with community partners and promotes authentic assessment methods to foster critical and reflective thinking in students.
In 2020, she completed her Masters in Adult and Community Education in Maynooth University, where her thesis focused on using critical, emancipatory pedagogy in teaching for several years on an integrated education project on the Blanchardstown campus. https://inhef.ie/integrated-education-programme-blanchardstown/
She was programme chair of the level 7 Bachelor of Science in Horticulture programme, contributes to committees in equality, diversity and inclusion, green campus, engaged research network, ability network and the authentic assessment community of practice in the university.
