Ensembles and Concerts Manager

Born in Dublin into a musical family, Rónán studied the trumpet with Prof. James Cavanagh in the Royal Irish Academy of Music from an early age.  As principal trumpet with the Junior and Senior National Youth Orchestras he toured Europe and USA playing in some of the most famous concert halls in the world.  Rónán continues to work as a freelance musician playing with various orchestras, musicals, bands, and TV shows.

A keen educator, Rónán worked for a year as a junior infants teacher, then on receiving his HDip he spent the next few years teaching Music and English to Leaving and Junior Certificate students in several schools including Blackrock College and Catholic University School (CUS). Rónán has also taught trumpet both privately and in a number of schools, and has been the trumpet tutor with the NYOI on several occasions.

Before coming to TU Dublin, Rónán was the manager of the NYOI and had two separate engagements with the RTE CO as assistant manager.  A student of many musical genres Rónán found himself working as a DJ for Jazz FM from 2000–2002 which led to a further freelance career as a DJ playing in many venues in Dublin. In 2006 he was asked to host a weekly Jazz program on RTE Radio 1, which ran for 8 months.

Rónán has been writing for The Irish Times since 2006.  He is the creator/writer of the 32-page Music In The Classroom supplement which comes out several times a year. As an off and on writer, two of his essays were chosen to be the lone prose content for the prestigious Trinity literature magazine Icarus, joining the ranks of previous contributors Colm Tóibín and Seamus Heaney.

In 1997 Rónán received his BA from UCD taking English and Music as his subjects. In 2000 he received his MSc in Marketing from DIT where his thesis focused on the promotion of both Irish and International musical artists within the context of the Irish market. In 2003 he received his HDip from UCD.
