Dr Paul McNulty
PhD MA BMus LTCL
Head of School
Paul McNulty was educated at Queen’s University Belfast where he also held the position of Hamilton Harty Organ Scholar at St. Anne’s Cathedral. He studied piano under Tom Davidson and organ under David Drinkell and Desmond Hunter. After completing a BMus and MA in Twentieth-Century Music, Paul lectured for three years at Maynooth University and was a teaching fellow at Queen’s. Following this, he completed a PhD in Durham University under the supervision of Max Paddison, examining Olivier Messiaen’s musical language in his ‘experimental’ period from the late 1940s. He joined the staff of DIT (now TU Dublin) as a full-time lecturer in January 2006 and teaches core modules on the BMus and BMusEd degrees. In addition, he specialises in analysis (particularly twentieth-century techniques), Wagner, and musicological studies.
Paul’s research interests include the music of Messiaen, musical ‘language’ in the twentieth century, Wagner, practice-based performance research, and analysis as an aid to interpretation and performance. Paul supervises candidates on the Conservatoire’s new DMus degree, which offers advanced performers the opportunity to pursue performance as research. He is a former programme chair for the BMus programme and continues to be involved in programme development at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
