Lecturer

Philip Graydon is currently a Lecturer in Music at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama (2006-) and a Lecturer in Musicianship at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (2010-), having previously taught at National University of Ireland, Maynooth (2002; 2005-2006), from which he received the degrees of BA and MA. He has contributed to teaching and supervision at BMus, MMus and doctoral level at the Conservatory.

Trained as a classical guitarist, Philip has studied interpretation with Kevin Jennings and Benjamin Dwyer.

Philip’s research interests centre on music and culture in early twentieth-century Austria and Germany, with a particular focus on German opera in its historical, political and aesthetic contexts. He received his PhD from The Queen’s University of Belfast with a dissertation on Richard Strauss’s 1927 opera, Die ägyptische Helena. He has published articles on Strauss in The Musical Quarterly and the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, in addition to an essay in The Cambridge Companion to Richard Strauss. Philip has presented papers at conferences in Ireland, the UK and Serbia, and was Honorary Membership Secretary and a Council Member of The Society for Musicology in Ireland (2006-2012).
