Head of School
Dr Paul McNulty was educated at Queen’s University Belfast where he also held the position of Hamilton Harty Organ Scholar at St. Anne’s Cathedral. He studied piano under Tom Davidson and organ under David Drinkell and Desmond Hunter, and has been active as an organist/choral director for nearly forty years. After completing a BMus and MA in Twentieth-Century Music, Paul lectured for three years at Maynooth University and was a teaching fellow at Queen’s. Following this, he completed a PhD in Durham University under the supervision of Max Paddison, examining Olivier Messiaen’s musical language in his ‘experimental’ period from the late 1940s.
Paul joined the staff of TU Dublin Conservatoire as a full-time lecturer in January 2006, later becoming the Programme Chair for the BMus programme and seeing the programme through two reviews. He specialises in musicological and analytical courses but has taught a wide range of courses on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Paul co-supervised the first DMus in TU Dublin and is currently working with two other DMus candidates, where the emphasis is on research informing practice.
Paul’s broad research interests include the music of Messiaen, musical ‘language’ in the twentieth century, Wagner, practice-based performance research, and analysis as an aid to interpretation and performance.
