Pádhraic Ó Cuinneagáin received his early music education at the RIAM, Dublin, and as a scholarship student of the Schola Cantorum, St Finian’s College, Mullingar.  He attended University College Dublin, completing DipMus, BA and BMus degrees, and NUI Maynooth, graduating with a first-class honours MA degree in performance and interpretation. He also holds a LRAM in piano performance. 

Pádhraic has lectured in piano/academic studies for undergraduate and postgraduate courses at TU Dublin Conservatoire, and has been Programme Chair for BMusEd, BMus and MMus programmes, and Acting Head of the Department of Academic Studies. His research interests include contemporary Irish piano music and the piano works of E.J. Moeran.  

Pádhraic studied piano with Mabel Swainson (Dublin), Louis Kentner (London), and organ with Fr Frank McNamara and Prof. Gerard Gillen.  He also played clarinet in the Irish Youth Orchestra. He was a prize-winner at Feis Ceoil and other major national music festivals, a finalist in the RTE ‘Young Musician of the Year’ competition and winner of the prestigious Players-Wills Bursary for piano.   He has performed across Ireland in concert and on radio/television as soloist, in concerto, as accompanist and in chamber music, and has given recitals abroad with Irish and international instrumentalists and singers.   He has given first performances of works by composers including Antonio Andriani, Tom Cullivan, Donncha Dennehy, Hormoz Farhat, Joseph Groocock, Fergus Johnston, Andrew Johnstone, Eric Sweeney, Andrew Synnott, James Wilson and Andrew Wise, and he has performed with the contemporary music ensemble Concorde.  He has recorded sonatas for violin/piano and violoncello/piano by the Irish composer Tom Cullivan with Italian violinist Carmelo Andriani and Irish cellist Annette Cleary , Tchaikovsky songs with the Irish bass-baritone Conor Biggs, and ‘Joyce Songs’ for Lyric FM and Beethoven’s Irish folksongs with various singers.  Recent concert performances have included lieder recitals in Ireland and Italy (Venice and Ravenna) with Irish and Scottish singers. 

Pádhraic has wide experience as an external examiner for the Department of Education and Science, NCEA, NCCA and HETAC, and has adjudicated at music festivals throughout Ireland.  He has given lectures and masterclasses on piano repertoire. He has contributed to CMC and TCD publications of Irish contemporary piano music and has written 6 articles for the Encyclopaedia of Musicians in Ireland.
