John O'Connor teaches the elective module Virtual Environments: Is one life enough? which is delivered in the virtual world Second Life and supervises masters thesis work. From 1998 to 2011 he served as Head of School and then as Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities until 2013. During that time he established the BA in Visual Art programme, the first such programme to be offered from an offshore island and delivered entirely in Sherkin Island Co Cork; led the development of the Masters in Professional Design Practice in association with the Design, Print & Packaging Skillnet; and set up Idea Camp which offered creative training to primary school children by university lecturers during the summer months. He also led the development of the East Quad in Grangegorman as the home of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. Prior to joining TU Dublin he established the practice Information Design to collaborate with national and international clients and has served on representative bodies in the sector. He is currently Strategic Lead of the European University of Technology Alliance (EUt+) for TU Dublin.
John is a member of the European Culture and Technology Laboratory (EUT Lab+) and his research interests include education in virtual worlds, VR and AI.
