Congratulations to BA in Interior and Furniture Design graduate Emma Gill for winning 2022 Undergraduate Essay Prize from the Design History Society.

Emma's essay explores how modern interior design us used to reinforce the concept of villainy in cinema. The essay is take from Emma's undergraduate dissertation and discusses how modernist utopian aspirations became subverted, so that Modernism is now associated as dystopian and oppressive in popular culture. This is particularly emphasised through use of mid-century design and hedonistic consumerism.

Emma's supervisor was Dr. Sorcha O’Brien.
