Young Reporters for the Environment Competition 2025

The Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) competition is for students aged under 25 to research environmental issues and promote solutions through journalism. Registrations for the YRE Competition 2025 are open the deadline for application is Friday 28 March 2025.

YRE have already started to receive some incredible entries on invasive species, the biodiversity crisis, importance of peatlands, forests to looking at litter and waste, fast fashion, water and the connection to ecosystem restoration and are calling on TU Dublin students aged up to 25 years of age to apply. Past webinars can be viewed on their you tube channel and you can check out the work from previous winners here for inspiration.
The purpose of the competition is for students to investigate environmental issues, propose solutions, report it through various journalistic content – articles, photo reportage or video and raise awareness by sharing it with an international community.
There is an overall prize fund of €2,000 across all categories and each winner will receive a YRE goodie bag including a hoodie, writing pad, keep cup along with publication on our exposure platform YRE Ireland - Told with Exposure where you can view previous winning entries for inspiration. All national winners are entered into the international award where schools from over 42 countries taking part receive international publication and recognition. An award ceremony will also be held for national winners here. Previous winners here have been published in regional and national press, radio and RTE.
Submissions must include:
- The name of the author(s)
- Their age on the day of submission to the National Competition.
- The name of their registered third level institution (TU Dublin).
- They must also: be the correct length, size and format, etc. See specific guidelines for Articles, Photographs and Video
- Concentrate on possible solutions or present existing possible solutions through an expert (different local stakeholders).
- Have been disseminated to local audiences through more than three different outlets. Proof of this will attain marks.
- Have accreditation and have permission for usage of the pictures and music which are not original and used in the Article and the Video.
- The final project, a journalistic piece (article, video clip, photograph or podcast report), must be submitted by Friday 28th March 2025.
The global Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) coordinate the YRE programme and An Taisce are the national operators in Ireland.
