About this event

Dr Colum Gibson is a senior environmental consultant and programme manager with a PhD in physical chemistry, and is the Manager of MTU’s Clean Technology Center (CTC). Along with having extensive experience working with industry, the waste sector, local authorities, communities and national agencies, Colum is an IEMA auditor and has worked with CTC for over 20 years. He has worked on a range of topics including energy efficiency, environmental indicators, waste management, and prevention, water and energy assessments, zero emissions and waste environmental management systems, creative thinking, innovation and sustainable community development.

Prior to the seminar The School of Culinary Arts & Food Technology will host the final of their school's SATLE funded Food Waste Competition (12:00-13:00pm). The student competition sought food waste solutions for student training kitchens, bakeries, restaurants and bar located in Central Quad. Student finalists will present their ideas to a panel of judges, in a Dragon's Den like styled event, with the three winners receiving SATLE bursaries and becoming school food waste champions. This project is part of a larger food waste initiative in the School which seeks to build capacity at academic and operational levels, across the staff and student bodies, by the introduction of food waste initiatives, measurement techniques and dedicated equipment. As part of the project they are currently piloting a smart bin system in one of their training kitchens from Positive Carbon. The team involved includes Sheona Foley (Project Lead), Shannon Dickson, James Fox, Eamon Lynch, Paul Kelly, Roseanna Ryan, Judith Boyle and Dr Denise O’Leary (Head of School). All are welcome to attend both the competition final and SDG Literacy the seminar.

Refreshments will be provided.
