An appetite for a sustainability mindset during Global Donut Days
Between the 6-9 November 2024, the global community of Donut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) celebrated Global Donut Days, a community-led festival, with online and in-person events taking place around the world, each focused on Doughnut Economics (Raworth, 2017).
TU Dublin celebrated the festival with two ‘Step into the Donut’ workshops at Lower House, Grangegorman, and at Aungier Street campus. The two activities engaged a total of 65 participants with students, staff, and members of the wider community in attendance.
The donut conceptualisation represents an ecologically safe and socially just space in which humanity can thrive in the 21st century. As part of the activity participants are invited to ‘Step into the Donut’ where they are introduced to the concept of Donut Economics and reflect on the possibilities for local sustainability action.
Speaking at the event Sustainability Education & Innovation Lead, Dr Lucia Walsh said:
The Sustainability Education team are working with colleagues from across the university to embed sustainability knowledge and skills into our curricula in a meaningful way and to empower our students at TU Dublin to become sustainability-focused global citizens.
Speaking of the approach to learning about sustainability Sustainability Education Lead, Dr Olivia Freeman said:
We employ many tools to drive engagement and thinking around sustainability and are very focussed on active learning and practice-based approaches – stepping away from the confines of the classroom where possible and learning by doing and feeling.
If your group are interested in hosting a ‘Step into the Donut’ workshop please contact Lucia and Olivia to discuss the opportunity.
Shared Impact
By taking part in the 'Step into the Donut' activity, participants are supporting TU Dublin's Strategic Intent to 2030 under the pillars of
- People (fostering individual talents in an ever-changing world),
- Planet (a powerhouse for living & breathing sustainability),
- and Partnership (delivering shared impact).
Involvement in a Step into the Donut workshop, not only helps you understand our planetary boundaries but it creates a space to discuss local sustainability actions with like minded people; this supports many of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
