The HEA National Review of Gender Equality in Irish HEIs was published in December 2022.  The review group comprised of five national and international experts, including Dr. Philip Owende from TU Dublin.

The Expert Group made recommendations across a range of areas including

  • Leadership;
  • Organisational Culture;
  • Teaching, Learning, Research and Quality Assurance;
  • Intersectionality;
  • Career Development;
  • Precarity; and
  • Data Analysis

Welcoming the publication of the report Professor Yvonne Galligan, Director of EDI in TU Dublin said that

The higher education sector has made significant progress in advancing gender equality since 2016 which the Expert Group have commended.

This review recommends broadening and deepening our actions by focusing on intersecting equality issues and ensuring security, equality, dignity and recognition at work for all throughout the career lifecycle.

We look forward to further aligning our Gender Equality, Race Equity and Ending Sexual Violence and Harassment institutional actions with key recommendations.’

Dr Philip Owende who is a member of the Expert Group said that

The review’s survey data indicated that embedding gender equality and EDI reporting more broadly in Institutional Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement (QA-QE) policies and processes would have immediate positive impacts.

I particularly welcome the recommendations on ‘gender-sensitive QA-QE processes’.  QA-QE policies are statutory frameworks through which good practices are adopted and continuously enhanced, and progress monitored in partnership with QQI, the HEA, and other Professional Regulatory and Statutory Bodies’
