John Jones, Technician, TU Dublin
John has worked as a chemistry technical officer in the School of Chemical and BioPharmaceutical Sciences on TU Dublin's Tallaght campus for more than twenty years. He was lead technician in the Process Analytical Lab (PAT) for over a decade, taking the lab from the commissioning stage up to a fully functional R & D, service lab. He facilitates training and knowledge transfer sessions to staff and postgraduate research students on the current suite of equipment. John's work has always been informed by International best practice, based on his experiences and interactions in several capacities as a student, as a technical support, a researcher, and on his role as lead on an industry focused laboratory. He holds a BSc in Applied Chemistry and is currently completing a Masters in Science aligned to his work in the PAT laboratory.
Enterprise Academy Fellowship
Leveraging Mobile Laboratories to Facilitate Collaborations between Universities and Enterprises
In all science disciplines, there is significant crossover on analytical techniques and equipment: for example, the microscope is the cornerstone of forensics analysis, but it is also used by every biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical and elemental analysis lab would for their own specific analysis. This fellowship will explore the possibility of creating and deploying a mobile laboratory, allowing field work to take place in any setting: instead of bringing students from large distances to us, we will bring the lab to them. It will contain a suite of basic day-to-day equipment for use by undergraduates and postgraduate students across Ireland. Higher specification equipment would be stocked to afford the real-world applications of the day-to-day uses in the laboratory setting. The Mobile analytical lab will give TU Dublin a “Wow factor” at various open days and student recruitment events nationwide. Similarly, industry partners may be interested in taking some of the equipment onto their premises to generate data and see if it is a suitable fit for them. The fellowship will create final blueprint for the lab, seek funding for the project and prepare a plan for implementation.
