Seán McHugh is a Lecturer in Computing for over 20 years at the Department of Computing, TU Dublin, Tallaght Campus. He has lectured on undergraduate and post graduate programmes particularly in the areas of database technologies and machine learning.  Seán also has a special interest in industry engagement. He has pioneered the development of internship programmes on undergraduate and post-graduate Computing programmes.

The On Campus Internship Convene project is planned to be an innovative flexible alternative pathway to traditional work placements.  There is great diversity of students at the university with students from different socio-economic backgrounds, under-represented groups, students with physical disabilities as well as neurodiversity students.  Not always they can access traditional internships during their studies.  The On Campus Internship model is an inclusive pathway with the aim to provide students with the key knowledge and competencies to successfully access the workforce and relevant careers when they graduate.

We always look to improve the connection between graduates and enterprise, which have a need for talented, industry ready graduates. The project will co-create the 'on-campus internship' process with the advice of industry leaders and partners.

The On-Campus Internship – An Innovative, Flexible, Inclusive Pathway to Traditional Work Placements

The Department of Computing at TU Dublin’s Tallaght campus represents a diverse group of students from different socio-economic backgrounds, under-represented groups, and students with physical disabilities as well as neurodiversity, for whom traditional internships are not always accessible. Seán’s fellowship project aims to be an innovative, flexible, inclusive pathway to traditional work placements. Working to improve the connection between graduates and enterprise, who have a need for talented, industry-ready graduates, the On-Campus Internship will be co-created with the advice and insights of industry leaders and partners. It will provide students with the key knowledge and competencies to successfully access the workforce and relevant career opportunities when they graduate.

Seán's fellowship project aligns closely with Convene's Sustainable Innovators for Enterprise (SIE) model which embeds enterprise challenges into on-campus programmes offering a light-touch, low-cost test bed for innovation. Seán will be working closely with the SIE team on the development of his fellowship project and sharing learnings along the way.
