Students study the traditional music practices within the context of a number of different regions, countries, societies and ethnic groups. Particular emphasis is placed on how factors such as religious belief, gender biases, political influence, societal attitudes and the effects of migration have impacted on music practices and the development of music practices over time.

This module is delivered through lectures in which a number of case studies from around the world are explored. Case studies may include (but are not confined to) Indian Classical music, Gypsy Music in Europe and the Middle East, the music traditions of Spain, West African traditions, Argentinean tango, Brazilian samba and Blues.
