The aim of this module is to provide students with an awareness of the theoretical and practical aspects of well-being and health promotion in relation to children and early years settings. Upon completion of the module, students will have an understanding of holistic health, be able to recognise when a child is unwell and be made aware of common childhood illnesses. Students will gain knowledge of strategies for promoting health and well-being in early years settings; specifically, in relation to hygiene, nutrition and physical activity.
Children’s Health and Wellbeing
Defining health and well-being; Promoting a safe environment; Common childhood accidents and illnesses; Review of chronic illnesses and impact on child and family.
Hygiene and infection control
Chain of infection; Prevention of cross infection; Oral hygiene; Physical care; Intimate care; Skincare.
Practical skills
Nappy changing; Toileting; Caring for sick child; Feeding; Weaning.
Promoting Health
Health promotion; Healthy Ireland; Behaviour change; First Five – Promoting Positive Health Behaviours; Health Screening; and, Vaccinations
Physical activity, nutrition
Breast and bottle feeding; Age appropriate nutrition and balanced meals; Specific dietary requirements; Health and hygiene for food preparation; HACCP guidelines; Mealtime routines and social interaction; Positive attitudes towards food; Obesity and inactivity.
