English language requirements

Undergraduate Applicants English Language Requirements 

Applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of English language proficiency. The following English language proficiency tests and results are acceptable for most programmes at undergraduate level. The certificate of your English language standard must have been issued within 2 years of the expected start of your course. Postgraduate requirements can be found on individual programme pages.

TU Dublin accept the following tests: 

IELTS Academic Test: The minimum score is 6.0 with no less than 6 in each component, unless otherwise stated. Please be aware that some programmes require a higher score. Details can be found on individual programme pages for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

TOEFL iBT Test: The minimum score is 80, unless otherwise stated. Please be aware that some programmes require a higher score.

Duolingo English Test: The minimum score is 120 and a score of at least 110 in each subscore, unless otherwise stated. Please be aware that some programmes require a higher score.

LanguageCert ESOL Test: The minimum score is B2 Communicator High Pass with no less than 33 in each skill taken with no more than 3 months between components, unless stated otherwise. Please be aware that some programmes may require a higher score.

In addition, applicants must meet the other TU Dublin specific requirements for the particular programme(s) applied for, (Maths, Science etc.). See individual programmes of study for detailed entry requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Level Required (Some programmes may require a higher score)

IELTS (Academic)  6.0 with no less than 6 in each component
Duolingo Minimum 120 overall with minimum 110 in each component
TOEFL iBT 80 with no less than 21 in writing and at least 18 in every other section
GCSE English Grade C
International Baccalaureate English A1, A2 or B: 5 at Higher Level (4 at Standard Level if presenting IB through English)

Cambridge English Language Examinations

180+ on cambridge English scale with no less than 175 in each skill and use of English ie

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Grade C (CEFR Level C1 or C2)

Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Grade C (CEFR Level C1 or C2)

Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE): Grade A (CEFR Level C1)
Pearson PTE Academic 65
ETAPP (English Test for Academic and Professional Purposes) C1 (or higher)
GCE O Level English Grade C
Irish Leaving Certificate Ordinary Level OD3 or O6/H7
NEAB Test English Pass
Norwegian Vitnemal Grade Average 4
UG Trinity ISE Trinity ISE III (C1) with at least merit in each skill category
PG Trinity ISE Trinity ISE IV (C2) with at least merit in each skill category
OIB (Option Internationale du Baccalauréat) Option International (OIB): 11 in English language and literature (where the co-efficient is greater than 5). Where the co-efficient is less than 5, a minimum result of 13 is required. British version of the OIB: C1 or C2 on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

LanguageCert International ESOL Test

B2 Communicator High Pass with no less than 33 in each skill taken with no more than 3 months between components.
