Mathematics Competency Test for Level 8 Engineering

TU Dublin - City Centre is holding a Mathematics Competency Test (MCT) for applicants to its Level 8 (Honours) Engineering (General Entry) TU805 programme which require Higher Level Maths.

The purpose of the MCT is to offer candidates an alternative route to achieve this minimum entry requirement.

The MCT is not obligatory and no extra CAO points are awarded for successful students. Those students that are successful will have met the minimum entry requirement of Higher Level Maths in Leaving Certificate Mathematics. 

The MCT is set at a similar standard as the Leaving Certificate Honours Mathematics examination. Students that have studied the Leaving Certificate Mathematics curriculum at Honours Level are invited to sit the exam.

There is no cost to sit the tutorials and / or exam. 

TU Dublin will be accepting applications to sit the MCT from those who have applied to TU Dublin via CAO for the Level 8 Honours Programme which have a minimum requirement of an H4 in Mathematics, namely:

  • Dates: Monday 6th & Tuesday 7th April 2020 
  • Time: 9:30am to 5pm (break 1pm - 2pm for lunch) each day 
  • Location of Tutorials: TU Dublin, Kevin Street    


  • Date: Wednesday 8th April 2020 
  • Time: Please arrive at 9am. Exam starts at 9.30am sharp (3 hours duration)
  • Location of Test: TU Dublin, Kevin Street 

ID REQUIRED:  A RECOGNISED FORM OF PHOTO ID WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIT THE EXAM | E.g.,Passport or Driving License or (An Garda Síochána) National Age Card. 

How do I apply? 

  • Upon successful completion of the online form (below), the online form will state "You have now registered for the April sitting of the MCT - thank you!"  - this is your acknowledgement that you have registered for the MCT. 
  • If multiple submissions are made for the same applicant, we will take the information from the latest submission only.
  • A courtesy reminder email will be sent to all about a week before the MCT.
  • The onus is on the applicant to submit correct information in the online form.  This information will be used to communicate reminders, results, etc.    
  • There will be another sitting in August. Applicants are welcome to attend one or both sittings. August details will be provided after April.
