The TU732 Bachelor of Technology in Timber Product Technology degree can lead to a range of careers in the timber-related sectors of the furniture and construction industries, including furniture manufacturer, joiner, operations or drawing office manager in a timber factory, timber specifier and timber consultant.

No previous experience with timber is required.

In Year 1, you’ll gain craft skills by using hand tools and machines to make a variety of objects, and learn how to represent these in hand and computer drawings. You’ll also learn about different types of timber, timber products, the timber industry and workshop safety, and will improve your maths, communication and writing skills.

In Year 2, you’ll develop your craft skills further using a wider variety of tools, machines, jigs and CNC, culminating in the production of several high-quality products. You’ll learn about furniture and joinery design and finishing, will further your maths and CAD skills, and learn to estimate costs and tender for work.

In Year 3, you’ll further develop skills in furniture, kitchen and joinery manufacture while learning more about the business and law of timber product manufacture, production management and design for manufacture.

On graduation, you’ll be equipped to progress to ordinary and honours degree programmes in TU Dublin or elsewhere.

Advanced Entry to Year 2 is available for graduates of related QQI Level 6 programmes and apprenticeships.

If you attain the appropriate level in your final examinations, you may progress to related Level 8 programmes. The most common progression route is by advanced entry into Year 3 of TU975 BA in Interior Design (furniture design strand), a four-year, Level 8 programme. Other progression routes may be possible into product design, production management and a range of business degrees in TU Dublin.

I came to this course straight from Leaving Cert, unsure of what to expect. A few weeks in, I realised working with wood was exactly what I enjoyed doing. If you like working with wood and want to produce some beautiful and unique pieces of furniture, then I would highly recommend doing this course.
Having spent 8 years in this industry, I have found that the TPT course gives a great education in all the areas of Woodwork, Machinery, Cabinet-making and Joinery. By combining all three trades, it gives the students a much more diverse qualification on which to enter industry. Today’s industry requires graduates with multiple skills and this course produces such graduates.
