Additional Requirements/Information: You must undergo Garda vetting. You must complete the required documentation, including a full list of all previous addresses, in order for clearance checks to be made. Students with previous addresses outside of the Republic of Ireland must provide evidence of vetting by the relevant authority in which the address is located and at their own cost.
Currently Irish addresses are vetted by the Garda Vetting Bureau at no cost to the student.

Dispensing opticians advise on the most appropriate spectacle frames and lenses for a patient’s optical prescription. They take the client’s visual, lifestyle, cosmetic and vocational needs into account when recommending frames and lenses.

Some dispensing opticians work as managers in optical practices. In certain cases, they may fit contact lenses.

This programme is approved by CORU (reland’s multi-profession health regulator).

There is a shortage of dispensing opticians in Ireland, and the TU Dublin dispensing programme is the only one in the country. Since the programme started in 2015, this shortage will continue for some time.

Starting salaries for newly qualified dispensing opticians (as at January 2019) are as high as €35k per annum in the Republic of Ireland. There is no requirement to take work home, job-related stress is minimal, and you can work as a locum.

Most newly qualified dispensing opticians enter practice as employees of other dispensing opticians/optometrists, but you can also own and operate your own business.

Irish-registered dispensing opticians can work in Australia, and TU Dublin is also seeking approval for graduates of the programme to work in the UK. To work in the USA or Canada, you may be required to undertake a national certification test and/or an adaption period of state-registered apprenticeship.

The course covers subjects such as geometrical and physical optics, visual science, cell biology, ophthalmic optics and dispensing, ocular anatomy and physiology, contact lens practice and anterior eye disorders, and occupational vision.

You’ll spend all of third year on placement.

Note: You’ll be required to insert drops, contact lenses and probes (with ocular anaesthetic) into fellow students’ eyes and allow fellow students to insert the same into your eyes. All procedures are carried out in a safe, clean, clinical environment under the supervision of an optometry faculty member.

On graduation, you’ll be equipped to progress to ordinary and honours degree programmes in TU Dublin.

The entire of the third year is spent on placement covering the modules:

  • Optical Dispensing Case Studies
  • Ophthalmic Dispensing Practice Placement

All Optometry and Ophthalmic Dispensing undergraduates are required to insert drops, contact lenses and probes (with ocular anaesthetic) into fellow students’ eyes and allow fellow students to insert the same into their eyes during the course of their programme. All procedures will be carried out in a safe, clean, clinical environment under the supervision of an optometry faculty member.

Because the class is small you make friends very quickly, but you still have the benefits of a large class too because we spend so much time with the optometry students. Right from the start we are learning and practising skills that are directly applicable to the job of dispensing and even getting a weekend or summer job is fairly easy because there is such a shortage of dispensing opticians out there. The course wasn’t my first choice but I’m so glad that I ended up on it.
