Almost everything we touch in daily life is designed and manufactured. The fundamentals of the Manufacturing & Design (M&D) Engineering discipline are manufacturing technology and design for manufacture combined with business and enterprise management.

M&D engineers have the vital task of solving society’s innovation and production tasks. They’re involved in the design products and the efficient management of resources and technology to produce quality goods and services for society.

One of their key roles is developing more innovative products, resulting in a high value-added manufacturing sector. Their skills and knowledge can be applied across a broad spectrum of the engineering sector.

In this programme, you’ll acquire the right mix of technical, managerial and communication skills that will equip you for a wide range of careers in a broad spectrum of industries.

You’ll learn about the structure and operation of a manufacturing enterprise and the planning and simulation tools needed to help make cost-effective decisions. You’ll acquire team-working and innovation and entrepreneurial skills.

The course also aims to produce environmentally responsible engineers, who will conduct manufacturing activities with due regard to the environment and regulatory and legal requirements.

You undertake a major project over the two final semesters. As part of this project, you have the opportunity to become involved in the student competition to design and build a race car and compete against other universities in Silverstone UK.

On graduation, you may proceed to postgraduate studies leading to the award of MSc, MPhil or PhD at research institutes and universities worldwide.

* A Major project is undertaken over the two final semesters. As part of this project students have the opportunity to become involved in the formula student competition which is to design and build a race car and compete against other Universities in Silverstone UK.

Upon graduation I immediately took up a position as a process engineer in an automation company in Co. Cavan, Ualto Ltd , who specialise in electrical and automation solutions for industrial plants. My role in the company included designing and wiring panels, electrical drawings and programming of automated equipment.
I have now taken up a position working as a design engineer with Combilift in Co. Monaghan who specialise in the manufacture of forklifts. The Manufacturing and Design Engineering programme gave me a great standing for the tasks required in such a demanding industry. Overall the programme gives a great insight into all areas of the manufacturing industry, and with the mixture of design, practical, business, and the addition of such a rewarding and professional project as the Formula Student, it makes graduates prime candidates for any company in the manufacturing field.”ings and programming of automated equipment.
