Course Title: Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering (Sustainable Infrastructure)
The need of embedding sustainability principles in the design of critical infrastructures has become essential to deliver innovative solutions which meet the requirements for achieving the future sustainable driving agenda, in particular, climate change and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
This course is designed to provide Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering graduates, and graduates from closely related disciplines, with specialised skills and knowledge in technical design for Sustainable Infrastructure. The course consists of 12 taught modules and a Research Project module, and focuses on sustainability, water engineering, numerical techniques, renewable and sustainable technologies and transport planning with options in advanced structural engineering.
The programme award is a Master of Engineering (ME) Degree, with an option to exit the course with a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip). Graduates of the course will be ideally suited to engage in sustainable engineering research, analysis, and design.
For acceptance onto the course an applicant must hold one of the following:
- An honours degree, with a minimum attainment of second class honours grade 2, in Civil/Structural/Environmental Engineering or a closely-related discipline. The degree should be of four years duration and accredited by the relevant professional body.
- Any qualification(s) deemed by TU Dublin as being equivalent to No. 1 above, when taken in conjunction with relevant work experience.
Note: Due to the considerable competition for our postgraduate courses, satisfying the minimum entry requirement is not a guarantee of a place. Depending on the course of study applications will be assessed based on your academic grades and may also take into account your work/life experience. Applicants may also be required to attend for interview for specific courses.
Graduates of the course will be equipped with advanced knowledge and a range of analytical and critical thinking skills which qualify them to undertaking energy, water, transport, structure, and geotechnical cutting-edge designs of critical sustainable infrastructures at international standards.
The graduates will also be exposed to a number of modelling software to allow them taking up a modelling career in the field of sustainable infrastructure. Besides that, the graduates will be capable to engage in various research and development (R&D) activities related to sustainable infrastructure.
The course consists of 12 taught modules each worth five “European Credit Transfer System” (ECTS) credits and a Research Project module worth 30 ECTS credits, giving the programme a total ECTS credits value of 90.

Assessment
A variety of assessment methods are used to assess the taught modules including assignments (group and individual), short tests, and formal examinations. The Research Project module is assessed using presentations and the final dissertation. End-of-semester formal examinations are held in January and May.
Modules are delivered over one and two academic years for full and part-time students respectively. Lectures are arranged to accommodate part-time students particularly to ensure minimal time away from work. Previous timetables are available on request. Each semester has a total duration of 15 weeks, with twelve weeks of class contact time, one week of review activities and two weeks of formal examinations. Full and part-time students attend the same classes.
Applications will open in February 2025.
Non-EU Students
Non-EU students, not resident in Ireland, are not eligible to apply for part time programs that are delivered on-campus. Applications for part time courses that require on-campus attendance will not be processed and the application fee will not be refunded.
