Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechatronic Engineering / Innealtóireacht Mheicitreonach

Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics/Mechatronic Engineering (NFQ Level 7) or equivalent qualification.

Mechatronic Engineering is a multi-disciplinary integrated approach to product design and development that has become a key enabling resource for gaining competitive edge in the modern manufacturing era. Consequently, it has had a significant influence in the nature of engineering education and training worldwide. As an emerging engineering discipline, Mechatronic Engineering integrates precision mechanical engineering, control theory, computer science and electronics as applicable to:

  • product design process, for creation of more functional and adaptable products
  • process control and automation
  • quality control/management
  • system efficiency enhancement, including ergonomics

Programme TU815 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechatronics (NFQ level 8) is therefore targeted towards those working in the above areas and allied industry, who have already achieved the award of Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics (NFQ level 7) or equivalent engineering qualification.

Employment opportunities exist in (among other key industries):

  • Precision Manufacturing
  • Manufacturing automation
  • Instrumentation technology and machine tools
  • Smart electrical appliances
  • Medical devices industries incorporating sensors, control and machine vision
  • Microprocessor and computer technology
  • Pharmaceutical industries
  • Automotive manufacturing industries
  • Industrial robotics

Graduates of this programme will be proficient to work on small and large scale Mechatronic Engineering projects in design, consultancy, project management, and service orientated tasks. The associated industry in Ireland recognises the substantive formation provided by engineering technician and technologists upskilling programmes in Mechatronics. Therefore, the programme has so far enrolled students from the following Irish companies and industry partners:

  • Bord Gáis Energy/Bord Gáis Networks
  • Boston Scientific
  • Cameron Ireland Ltd
  • Dromone Engineering Ireland
  • EMC Ireland
  • Fingal County Council
  • Honeywell International Technologies
  • Intel Ireland Ltd
  • PM Group
  • Premier Periclase Ltd
  • Realtime Technologies Ltd.
  • Tokyo Electron Ireland Ltd
  • Vistakon Ireland

The programme is delivered over 2 years in a Part-Time Mode. The subject areas covered include: Mathematics & Analytical Methods, Mechanics & Materials, Control Systems, Microcontroller/Embedded Systems, Software Engineering, Industrial Robotics & Vision Inspection, Industrial Networks & Distributed Systems, Advanced Computer Aided Design, Sustainable Energy Systems, and Enterprise Resources Management.

Project work is a unique and substantive element in the programme, and is undertaken over three semesters. In such project work, students will synthesize the knowledge gained and skills developed in the course work, including project management skills, to develop viable project proposals, and implement such projects within the designated timeframes.
