Overview
Capillary electrophoresis (CE), also known as capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE), can be used to separate ionic species by their charge and frictional forces. In traditional electrophoresis, electrically charged analytes move in a conductive liquid medium under the influence of an electric field. Introduced in the 1960s, the technique of capillary electrophoresis (CE) was designed to separate species based on their size to charge ratio in the interior of a small capillary filled with an electrolyte.
Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) technology is employed in a series of related separation techniques that use narrow-bore fused-silica capillaries to separate a complex array of large and small molecules. Depending on the types of capillary and buffers used, CE can be segmented into:
- Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE)
- Capillary Gel Electrophoresis (CGE)
- Capillary Isoelectric Focusing (CIEF)
- Isotachophoresis (ITP)
- Electrokinetic Chromatography (EKC)
- Micellar Electrokinetic Capillary Chromatography (MECC)
- Capillary Electrochromatography (CEC)
- Non Aqueous Capillary Electrophoresis (NACE)
