PhD Pathways
The Centre for Socially Engaged Practice-Based Research offers doctoral opportunities via two pathways:
- A practice-based PhD thesis, consisting of an original contribution to new knowledge in the form of a written thesis, alongside the submission of one or more mediated artefacts (film, photography, screen media, installation and exhibition). A 4-year full-time or 2-year part-time course.
- A PhD by Prior Publication through creative practice, designed for established media practitioners and visual artists, engaging critically with their publicly disseminated outputs completed during the past decade. 2-year part-time course.
Doctoral researchers in both pathways participate throughout the programme in both a weekly 'PhD Writing Roundtable' where students circulate in advance and present written work in progress (chapter drafts, conference papers, draft publications), together with a ‘Fieldwork Practice’ session in which students present ongoing mediated fieldwork content to peers and supervisors.
