Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) has witnessed unprecedented growth in academia and industry in recent years, given its essential role in supporting human-AI partnerships whereby humans can intelligibly and safely deploy data-driven AI methods in various settings, such as finance, healthcare and law. The Centre of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is the first of its kind in the Republic of Ireland and it aims to increase further and synergise cross-centres, college and external research collaboration. It is positioned at the intersection of AI, human-computer interaction, the social sciences, psychology, philosophy, mathematics and statistics. XAI is increasingly connected to policies on safety, ethics, and trustworthiness of AI. The objective is to improve the design and implementation of current and future AI-based technologies that will have a wider echo and are better aligned to humans. Additionally, these technologies will be better aligned to legislators and policy makers, amongst others, including the GDPR and its “right to explanation” for algorithmic decision-support.
The research centre's presents a compelling, coherent identity to the international research community and key stakeholders within Ireland, internationally and globally, indicating focus and excellence in this area of research at Technological University Dublin. This research centre covers the full spectrum across methodologies for explanation of various AI methods and techniques, and it will focus on demonstrating the practical utility of its applications in healthcare, medicine, neuroscience, finance, energy and law. In particular, the emphasis is on improving human interaction and AI-empowered machines. Eventually, through the AI-based methods and techniques that will be designed within the xAI centre, it is possible to deploy tangible resilient technologies for both the public and the private sectors that are more inclusive, supporting equality, diversity and inclusion, thus reducing inequalities among people. This can pave new paths for industry collaboration and commercialisation opportunities in the long term.
