We will upload our project resources, reports and findings in this section as they are completed.
- This is our first output from the PROFESS 12 project: a focused literature review on the skills needed for sustainability.
PROFESS 12: Project Report 1: The Global View on Skills Needed for Sustainability
- PROFESS 12: Project Report PR2: Priority Skills for Engineers on the Island of Ireland: Key Stakeholder Perceptions
Building on a European study (Beagon et al, 2022a) which identified at a European level the professional skills (53 competences in six sets) that engineers will need to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this report focuses on contextualising these skills to the island of Ireland. This research offers useful insights for the engineering education community by raising awareness of future-orientated thinking around sustainable development, the SDGs and the skills that engineers will require in this regard.
- The design of our summer school started with two co-creation exercises which we undertook with students to determine what the aims and learning objectives of the summer school should be. Our briefing document is included here for anyone who wishes to undertake a similar exercise:
PROFESS 12: Project Report 3: Briefing document for Co-creation Exercise
- We created a toolkit to set out clearly the aims, schedule and proposed activities for the summer school. We have also included detailed instructions on how to carry out each of the workshops and appendices which include the application form, templates for exercises and workshop instructions.
PROFESS 12: Project Report PR4: The PROFESS 12 Summer School Toolkit
- We also provided a Student Handbook for participants attending the summer school.

We recently presented initial outcomes of our survey at the International Manufacturing Conference held in Magee Campus, Ulster University, August 2023. The conference proceedings are available here Engineering Proceedings | IMC39 - Browse Articles (mdpi.com)
Our abstract is available here engproc-3033584
- One of our summer school students, Zamir Pestano presented his views on the success of the summer school at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Sustainable Energy and Environmental Protection Symposium at Brunel University, London.
- We were delighted to present some of our findings on of our research project at the SEFI conference held in Dublin in September 2023. Our paper outlines the different stakeholder perspectives of the skills engineers require:
- The PROFESS 12 Summer School - Evaluation Project Report R5 contains a thematic analysis of the reflections and feedback received from the students. The feedback will also be published in our paper to be presented at SEFI 2024 and will be uploaded here when proceedings are published.
