Am I entitled to eye and eyesight tests?

Yes, every employee who habitually uses a visual display unit as a significant part of normal work has a right to opt for an appropriate eye/eyesight test which is available at the National Optometry Centre (NOC) and paid for by TU Dublin City Campus. Please contact the NOC to make a direct appointment.

Is TU Dublin City Campus liable for the costs of providing glasses?

Where eye tests carried out by the NOC reveal that particular lenses are required for VDU work, the cost of minimum requirement frames and lenses are paid for by TU Dublin City Campus. Where an employee already wears glasses to correct a visual defect (normal corrective appliances), and routine change of lenses arises, if these glasses are adequate also for VDU work, TU Dublin is not liable as regards meeting the cost. The cost of dealing with more general eye problems which are revealed as a result of the tests and which are not directly related to working with a VDU is a matter for the employee as part of their general health care, taking account of health care entitlements.

What about safety glasses?

The NOC does provide safety spectacles for TU Dublin employees where specific safety spectacles are required as part of personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff members engaged in certain work activities. The NOC will ensure that they are provided and the relevant school/function will cover the cost of them.

It is imperative that staff members provide all relevant information regarding their activities so that the correct materials are sourced for safety spectacles. This is critical where chemicals are being used.

The National Optometry Centre, Central Quad on the Grangegorman Campus, is the place to come for all your eye care needs. We’re part of the university community and we love taking an active part in TU Dublin life.
