Learning Support

TU Dublin learning support is student-centered and addresses individual needs. During your needs assessment with your Learning Support Officer, your learning support requirements are identified. The learning support sessions are provided on an individual one-to-one basis or in small groups. Learning support is available to students registered with the DSS.

The learning support sessions include but are not limited to:

  • memory techniques
  • study skills
  • mind mapping
  • taking notes
  • revision and exam preparation
  • concentration
  • essay, report, and dissertation writing
  • personal learning strategies
  • and any other identified learning support needs

The aim of TU Dublin learning support is to nurture and encourage individual and academic development of the student while embracing diversity. Through engagement with the Learning Support Officer the student is encouraged to develop the critically important skills, tools, and techniques that minimize or eliminate barriers to learning and studying.

Your Questions Answered

  1. How can I make an appointment for learning support?
    Click on our People page, here you will find the contact details for your Learning Support Officer, including the online booking calendar link which shows available appointments. Appointments are of 1-hour duration.
  2. Where will my learning support meeting take place?
    We offer in person and online support via Teams. When you book an online appointment, an invitation to attend a session is automatically generated. Alternatively, in communication with the Learning Support Officer, an invitation can be issued for you to accept. Students will be advised when our support service is delivered on campus.
  3. Can I ask about my specific study issues?
    Yes, learning support is focusing on individual, identified needs. It is a good idea to let your Learning Support Officer know in advance what the nature of your query is.
  4. Can I have a follow-up appointment?
    Yes, in consultation with your Learning Support Officer a follow-up appointment can be arranged.
  5. I cannot see an appointment available but need to talk to the Learning Support Officer as soon as possible. What can I do?
    Send an email to the Learning Support Officer who will respond to your query.
  6. Is learning support the same as extra tuition?
    Extra tuition is different from learning support. Learning support is not subject-specific. It addresses the learning support recommendations identified during the needs assessment.
  7. In exams, I always run out of time. I get very overwhelmed and do not seem to be able to plan things very well. How can you help me?
    During the learning support meeting, all these issues can be addressed. You will be introduced to revision and exam strategies that will help you address these difficulties.
  8. How will my lecturer about my exam accommodations?
    Following your needs assessment, the relevant information is sent from the Disability Support central office to the Examination Office, Heads and Assistant Heads of School, and your School Administrator.
