Additional Resources for TU Dublin Students
Information for Parents & Guardians
The Disability Support Service (DSS) at TU Dublin city campus acknowledges that in some cases families have had a struggle to have the needs of their child recognised and adequately supported. However, once they have left secondary school, most students are regarded as being in charge of their own support.
This is particularly relevant for students who are over the age of 18 and thus are no longer considered to be minors in the care of their parents/guardians. This means that we cannot discuss a student’s progress or supports with any parent or guardian unless we have written permission from that student to do so. Similarly, once a student has commenced study at our university, we cannot meet with parents or guardians to discuss their progress or supports. Any such requests must come directly, and in writing, from the student concerned and the student must be in attendance at any proposed meeting. Even with the student's permission, such requests are at the discretion of the Head of the Disability Support Service.
The DSS are happy to provide general information and guidance, but we are bound by the Data Protection Act and our Code of Practice to maintain confidentiality.
For this reason, we believe it is extremely important for parents, guardians, and students to engage with our team prior to the student entering our university, to fully understand the role of the Disability Support Service in TU Dublin.
