Values & Meaning
The Values and Meaning pillar of the Thrive Framework recognises the importance of understanding our personal values and our values as a university community. By identifying individual and collective values and reflecting on what drives us, we can help create a stronger sense of purpose and direction.
We all seek meaning in our lives and to acquire a sense of value and worth, and for many, that includes serving something greater than ourselves. Having meaning or purpose in life is unique to each of us. Meaning may be pursued through a social or political cause, a creative endeavour, or a religious/spiritual belief for example. It may be found through study, volunteering, or community activities or may be found in our work.
Studies reveal that a sense of meaning at work and in our daily lives matters more to many of us than other factors such as compensation. When we find our work meaningful, it leads to greater engagement, commitment, and job satisfaction. A sense of meaning is guided by personal values. Through guided reflection and practical tools, staff can explore how their personal values contribute to both personal fulfilment and the broader mission of the university, promoting a culture of engagement and meaning.
