Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) has welcomed the award of €1.75M under the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) to fund the planning and design of Phase 1 of the Indoor Sports Facilities on the University’s flagship campus at Grangegorman.
Phase 1 will comprise of a 6,500 sq m facility comprising a Sports Hall, Gym, Climbing Wall, Fitness Studio and Changing Accommodation. Later phases will include a swimming pool with changing accommodation, squash, handball courts and an indoor jogging track.
Welcoming the announcement, Dr Noel O’Connor, Director of Student Development said, “The facilities will allow TU Dublin to deliver an excellent student experience, with an emphasis on the positive physical and mental health of the campus community. It also will further enhance the strong community engagement of TU Dublin with the local population of all ages in the Dublin 7 area. The sports complex will be a welcome addition and will significantly augment the availability of indoor sports facilities in the North Inner City area.”
The award came under Stream 1 proposals of the LSSIF and Dublin City Council submitted the application on behalf of a collaborative cross-sector group. As well as TU Dublin, partners in the project include the Grangegorman Development Agency, Mountaineering Ireland, Volleyball Ireland, Basketball Ireland, and Paralympics Ireland.
