Willie is an academic staff member of the University since 1989 when it was then Bolton Street College of Technology. Teaching on Apprentice and Undergraduate programmes in the areas of Manufacturing and Manufacturing Technology. After completing a Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship with Bord Na Móna, he graduated from Thomond College of Education.
Willie was appointed Head of Applied Technology in 2002, and led a Department which included Mechanical Apprenticeships as well as undergraduate programme in Maintenance Engineering. During this time, he also developed an undergraduate programme in Product Design.
Willie was then appointed Head of Manufacturing Technology in 2012 which included a broader base in Apprenticeship education (Metal Fabrication and Sheet Metalwork) as well as an undergraduate programme in Automation Engineering.
Willie was most recently appointed Head of Design Engineering in 2022 and is now focused on Product Design in TU Dublin City Campus and BioMedical Design in TU Dublin Tallaght Campus.
His academic interests include developing models of education to suit the user, different approaches to VET, developing links with industry, developing and delivering training programmes to industry, Erasmus programmes, supporting staff in self development and research, promoting cross discipline cooperation and collaboration.
