Sustainable Transport & Mobility Research Group (STMRG)

TU Dublin’s Sustainable Transport & Mobility Research Group (STMRG) is a group of multi-disciplinary researchers based within TU Dublin. STMRG and its members have a uniquely multi-disciplinary approach, with a core interest in progressing engaged and active research in sustainable transport and mobility policy and practice, both in Ireland and internationally. As well as being experienced academics, our team have worked in industry in the areas of transportation planning, engineering, urban design, logistics, health and physical activity promotion, policy making and behavioral interventions. STMRG’s multi-disciplinarity focus on sustainability within the built environment is enhanced through continuous engagement with industry, civic society and academic discourse working towards the social optimum.

MSc in Sustainable Transport & Mobility

TU Dublin is home to Ireland’s only accredited Transportation Planning qualification. The MSc in Sustainable Transport & Mobility is a part-time programme developed with industry and jointly delivered by the School of Architecture, Building and Environment and the School of Transport and Civil Engineering. At the core of the course and the associated research activity is the principle of sustainability and how integrated transport and mobility networks can be designed for the wider benefit of society, economy and environment. The course provides learners with both a theoretical and practical framework but also a basis to develop knowledge and to critically reflect on current transport and mobility environments. The MSc Programme Team additionally provide Micro-credential certificates in a range of relevant areas, including the 5 ECTS Certificate in Planning and Design for Active Travel.

Partnerships and Research Areas

Recent projects include working with Irish local authorities to evaluate sustainable transport infrastructure. We have been working with the Office of the Planning Regulator on a project using university campus’ as living labs to inform development planning requirements to deliver permeability to support more sustainable transport connectivity in all contexts. Over the past decade we have been trusted advisors to the Departments of Transport, Health, Sport, Higher Education, Education, Children & Youth, Environment and Planning and Local Government on developing policy for healthy and sustainable neighbourhoods. Core to this work has been providing a neutral space for conversation and collaboration.

STMRG are currently engaged in a ground-breaking and innovative research programme with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. In 2021 the group successfully completed Phase 1A (Interim Findings) of the “Evaluation and Review of the Phase 1 Covid-19 Mobility and Public Realm Works undertaken by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (DLRCoCo)”, as part of the “Covid Mobility Research Project”.  (Principal Investigator: Dr Sarah Rock).

STMRG has a key interest in inclusion, equity and fairness in transport systems and have played a core role in the development of the Vision Ireland Wayfinding Centre initiative which is a collaborative space where people with a disability, transport staff, built environment professionals, designers, academics and policy makers come together to accelerate an inclusive mobility agenda.

STMRG have a range of additional research interests, including: -

  • Access, inclusion and equity in transportation networks
  • Behaviour change and active travel
  • Future mobilities
  • Healthy streets and neighbourhoods
  • Integration of land use and transportation
  • Public transportation and network design
  • Urban greenways
  • Walkability
