An inclusive, diverse, outward-facing, international school of mathematics and statistics known for the quality of our learning & teaching, research, and career-ready graduates.
The School of Mathematics & Statistics has a long history of producing highly-qualified, influential graduates and world-class research. We are proud of the achievements of our alumni and of the wide range of programmes we offer which provide unique opportunities to engage with mathematics and develop mathematical awareness, understanding and appreciation. As mathematics and statistics play an increasingly important role in global development, these programmes continue to evolve and develop to incorporate the newest technologies and the latest discipline developments – providing the skills most needed by society and in the workplace. We aim to demonstrate, through our students and through our partnership and engagement with business and society, the beauty, importance, universality, and positive global impact of the mathematical sciences and to nurture a greater appreciation and enjoyment of mathematics by all.
The School of Mathematics & Statistics (SoMS) is one of four schools in the Faculty of Computing, Digital & Data in Technological University Dublin, the first technological university in Ireland and one of the largest universities, offering unique opportunities for learning and engagement. The School is based within the new, state-of-the-art facilities at Grangegorman in the centre of Ireland’s capital city, Dublin. Our facilities are therefore modern, technology enhanced and purpose built. We aim to be an inclusive, diverse, outward-facing, international school of mathematics and statistics known for the quality of our learning & teaching, research, and career-ready graduates.
Studying in the School of Mathematics & Statistics
The School of Mathematics & Statistics offers unique opportunities for study that include flexible pathways which cater for students from any background: from school leavers to part-time learners seeking to upskill or reskill; from professionals seeking specific knowledge and skills to students wishing to develop practical skills in applying mathematics and statistics; from individuals seeking a valuable postgraduate qualification and advanced knowledge for a high calibre career to students wishing to progress into research. Therefore, we provide both full-time and part-time programmes in mathematics and statistics as well as short courses and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules in specific topics. We are also developing more and more flexible and part-time study opportunities which allow learners to combine study, home and work life or engage with programmes in non-traditional ways.
The School’s programmes develop students' mathematical abilities in the context of the real-world by building on a sound foundation of mathematical principles with a range of modelling and IT skills, placing an emphasis on practical problem-solving techniques. The School’s engagement with industry ensures that our modern, technology-enhanced programmes remain up-to-the-minute and relevant and our graduates are prepared for complex professional roles in a demanding, technological world. Mathematics and statistics also provide extremely flexible qualifications. Mathematics and statistics underpin the ongoing development in many growing employment sectors from communications and information technologies to finance, science, data analysis and manufacturing. With excellent technical, analytical and mathematical problem-solving skills, our graduates are ideally suited to roles in any of these sectors and are valued by employers for their versatility, knowledge and skillsets. Information about our programmes can be found here.
Research in the School of Mathematics & Statistics
Researchers in the School of Mathematics & Statistics are engaged in research across the mathematical sciences and in interdisciplinary research with colleagues in other schools, research centres and universities both nationally and internationally. The School’s postgraduate students, studying for the degrees of MPhil or PhD, are mentored and supervised by academic staff at the forefront of their disciplines and, as part of research groups, contribute to the richness of the research community within the School. Details of the ongoing research in the School and the research interests of our academic staff are detailed in the Research section.
Our outreach and engagement
The School believes in promoting mathematics and statistics as important, universal lifeskills and is an active participant in outreach and community events – including national events such as Mathsweek and Scifest – hosting events for school children as well as offering open days and other opportunities for young people to visit the School of Mathematics & Statistics at TU Dublin. We also seek to work closely and collaborate with stakeholders, employers, graduates and industry on joint projects and to ensure that our graduates are equipped for the workplace: through mathematics, data analysis, applied statistics and mathematical modelling, ready to make a positive impact upon people and the planet.
The Mathematics Learning Centre (MLC)
The School is home to the Mathematics Learning Centre, a free, non-judgemental academic support centre available to all TU Dublin students to support their transition to third-level education and their learning in mathematics, no matter what undergraduate programme of study they are taking. The aim of the MLC is to help learners gain confidence in their abilities, improve their understanding and proficiency in mathematics and statistics and, through individual attention, become more self-assured learners.
