Constructing female identity in Irish politics: the impact of digital media

Charitha Marcus is a second-year PhD student at the School of Media. Charitha is a recipient of a highly competitive Irish Government Post-Graduate Scholarship in 2022. Charitha was also awarded the ‘Eda Sagarra Medal of Excellence’, one of the prestigious early career awards in Ireland which is awarded to the highest-scored student in the area of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Her PhD project examines how Irish women politicians use digital media tools to build their political identities while overcoming barriers. Her PhD project is funded by the Irish Research Council. Charitha's research is co-supervised by Dr Caroline Ann O'Sullivan, Head of the School of Media and Dr Kevin Hora, MPRII, Assistant Head of School and Head of Discipline of Journalism and Communications.
Charitha has completed her B.A. (special) Mass Communication degree from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. Charitha is also a recipient of the Indian Government Maulana Azad Post-Graduate Scholarship in 2016. Charitha completed her M.A. Journalism and Mass Communication degree from Bangalore University, in 2018.
Professionally, Charitha has worked as a probationary lecturer in Mass Communication at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka from 2019 to 2022. Before her academic career, Charitha worked in the advertising industry both in Sri Lanka and India. Charitha's research interests includes the fields of political marketing, digital media, and gender.
