National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies (NCFIS)
The NCFIS is a research centre that pools expertise from various disciplines within TU Dublin. It was developed as a response to strong collaborations between TU Dublin and several French and Irish Universities.
The first Franco-Irish Studies conference was held in what was then IT Tallaght in 2003. As a result of the success of that gathering, an application was made to attain Institute Research Centre status, which was granted in 2006. Since that time, the NCFIS has been successful in attracting graduate students and in bringing out numerous publications that are relevant to the Franco-Irish nexus.
The main aims and objectives of the Centre are outlined below:
- The NCFIS is an interdisciplinary international research lab which examines the cultural, literary, commercial, philosophical, gastronomic and historical links between France and Ireland;
- It is active in the recruitment and training of graduate students;
- While continuing to value traditional scholarship in terms of publications (15 essay collections to date and numerous monographs and journal articles), it also explores viable commercial opportunities as they present themselves;
- It has developed an invaluable research network between TU Dublin and several third level institutions in France, Ireland and further afield;
- It benefits from the strong support received from the French Embassy in Ireland, TU Dublin and other state bodies and companies.
