Mary is an Alumni of TU Dublin, having completed her undergraduate studies in Dublin Institute of Technology (now TU Dublin) in 1995. She was awarded her PhD in 2001 from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, having availed of the opportunity of an undergraduate Erasmus Exchange programme between Dublin Institute of Technology and Karolinska Institute. Following her PhD, she worked as a Researcher and Lecturer in Sweden at the Karolinska Institute and at Stockholm University, and became an opinion leader in her research field of lipid metabolism. She was appointed Associate Professor in Molecular Genetics at Stockholm University in 2008. Mary joined the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2010 to take up the position of Assistant Head of School of Biological Sciences. She was appointed Head of School of Biological, Health and Sports Sciences in 2013.
In her role as Head of School, she was responsible for the leadership, management and strategic development of the School of Biological, Health and Sports Sciences, ensuring best practice in education, student development and pastoral care of students, in addition to engagement with stakeholders including Professional and Regulatory Bodies, Industry, Community and Clinical partners. Mary has significant experience in working with statutory regulation and accreditation of education programmes and was appointed as a member of the Medical Scientists Registration Board, CORU in 2016.
Mary has carried out research in the area of biochemistry and molecular biology in Ireland, Holland and Sweden. She has authored almost 40 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. Her early research career focussed on identifying novel enzymes in lipid metabolism and more recently on the effects of novel complexes as therapeutic agents.
Mary is passionate about education and the opportunities it affords, having returned to third level education as a mature student in 1991 following a short career in the Banking sector.
