Bystander Intervention
Don’t Stand By – Stand Up and Speak Out
A Bystander is someone not involved in an event but who witnesses the event.
To become an active bystander we need to:
- Notice the event
- Interpret it as a problem
- Feel a responsibility to deal with it
- Possess the skills to act on it in a safe and non-confrontational way.
How to respond:
Only ever intervene when it is safe to do so, never place yourself in the middle of a physical altercation or a situation that could escalate to a dangerous event. In these circumstances call 112/99 or if you are in the University alert the porters and the security officers so they can contact emergency services.
