Bystander Intervention

Don’t Stand By – Stand Up and Speak Out

A Bystander is someone not involved in an event but who witnesses the event.

To become an active bystander we need to:

  1. Notice the event
  2. Interpret it as a problem
  3. Feel a responsibility to deal with it
  4. Possess the skills to act on it in a safe and non-confrontational way.

How to respond:

Bystander 1 263

Only ever intervene when it is safe to do so, never place yourself in the middle of a physical altercation or a situation that could escalate to a dangerous event. In these circumstances call 112/99 or if you are in the University alert the porters and the security officers so they can contact emergency services.

Language we can use:

 Bystander 2 263

Bystander 3 263
