Welcome to the homepage for the 'Artificial Intelligence Driving License' (AIDL)
This resource has been developed with the aim of supporting learners to:
- Use AI tools in their learning without compromising their academic integrity
- Make informed and ethical decisions about the integration of AI tools in their learning and assessment activities
- Strengthen their skills in AI literacy, ethical responsibility, and the critical evaluation of AI tools and outputs
How does it work?
The AIDL is an interactive, scenario-driven resource that introduces students to a range of important ethical standards and best practices for integrating AI into their learning and assessment tasks. Through engaging them in multiple-choice scenarios, students are given opportunities to make ethical choices about using AI tools and outputs, culminating in their own 'Artificial Intelligence Driving License'. Upon completion, they are provided with a set of principles or 'rules of the road' for navigating future challenges and are reminded that - in this rapidly evolving landscape - we are all perpetual learners who must remain curious and cautious and, above all else, uphold our commitment to academic honesty, transparency, and integrity.
You can take version 1.0 of the AIDL on this page (below).
How can I use it?
Designed for third level learners, the AIDL is intended as an Open Educational Resource (OER) that can be reused and adapted by educators anywhere. It will be made available in a range of different formats for use in your VLE or other learning platform (including SCORM, xAPI, and HTML). We're still developing the resource and haven't licensed it openly yet but if you'd like to make use of it you can contact it using this form.
How can I get involved in developing or piloting the AIDL?
Version 1.0 of the AIDL is available below; if you would like to try it and provide us with feedback here we would be most grateful. As this is a swiftly evolving field, we're committed to refining and expanding this resource collaboratively over the coming months, so if you are an educator or have expertise in AI and would like to help support its development, please get in touch. We're particularly keen to hear from educators who would like to pilot this resource with their learners.
Try the resource and take the AIDL 'theory test' yourself:
You can access the ethical principles or 'rules of the road' that inform the AIDL here: AIDL Rules of the Road V1 March 2025 (Version 1.0, subject to review).
