What Is Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is a general AI assistant designed to help users with a wide range of tasks and queries. It is integrated into specific Microsoft products and tailored to work within the Microsoft ecosystem, such as Bing, Teams and Windows. Microsoft Copilot works with Microsoft’s industry leading security products, such as Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Intune to protect against threats and vulnerabilities. It is grounded in data from the public web and is the only AI assistant supported for use at TU Dublin.  Users who are signed in with a TU Dublin Office 365 account can access Microsoft Copilot from:  www.microsoft.com/copilot on any PC or mobile browser.

The shield icon you see when you log into Microsoft Copilot (at the top righthand side of your screen, beside "New Chat") signifies that the system has enhanced security measures, and the Enterprise Data Protection (EDP) is enabled. It ensures that your interactions with Microsoft Copilot are secure and compliant with the university’s data protection policies. It acts as a visual indicator that your activities and information within Copilot are being safeguarded against potential threats. 

Microsoft Copilot Can Assist in the Following Ways: 

  • Information Retrieval: Ask questions and get accurate, up-to-date information on a wide range of topics. 
  • Content Generation: Helps create drafts for emails, documents, presentations, and more, streamlining the content creation process. 
  • Productivity Boost: Automate repetitive tasks, set reminders, schedule meetings, and manage your calendar. 
  • Data Analysis: Analyse data, create visualizations, and provide insights to help you make informed decisions. 
  • Brainstorming: Generate ideas for projects, planning and problem-solving. Tool suggestions for creative endeavours like art, music and design. 
  • Learning: Get explanations of complex concepts, study help, and educational resources. 
  • Tech Support: It can troubleshoot technical issues, provide guidance on using various software and tools, and ensure smooth operation of your devices.

What is the difference Between Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot 

Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot are both AI powered tools designed to enhance productivity, but they serve different purposes and have distinct features. Microsoft Copilot is a general-purpose assistant for individual users and Microsoft 365 Copilot is tailored for enterprise use within the Microsoft 365 suite of applications.

While Microsoft Copilot can refer to AI assistants across a range of Microsoft products, Microsoft 365 Copilot is focused on enhancing the capabilities with the Microsoft 365 ecosystem

 

Microsoft 365 Copilot Microsoft Copilot
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot is a paid licenced service specifically integrated into Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook.
  • It leverages advanced AI models to integrate seamlessly with these applications, making your workflow more efficient and productive.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot is not available in TU Dublin at present due to data security and governance requirements. However, we hope to introduce it in the future. 

 

  • Microsoft Copilot is a more general-purpose AI assistant that can help with a wide range of tasks but doesn’t offer extensibility like Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • It cannot invoke organisational content like files, emails, or chats when interacting in Copilot chat.
  • Users who are signed in with a TU Dublin Office 365 account can access Microsoft Copilot from:  www.microsoft.com/copilot on any PC or mobile browser.

 

Microsoft Copilot comes in different versions which are designed to cater to various roles and industries, enhancing productivity and efficiency across the board. Examples of the different flavours of Microsoft Copilot are the following: 

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot – integrated into Microsoft 365 applications. 
  • Dynamics 365 Copilot – assists with customer relationship management (CRM) 
  • GitHub Copilot – an AI powered code completion tool. 
  • Microsoft Security Copilot – assists security professionals by analysing threats. 
  • Copilot for Data and Analytics – helps users understand and analyse data. 
  • Role Specific Copilots – tailored to assist sales professionals with tasks and helps customer service teams manage inquiries. 

Where to Access Microsoft Copilot

Users who are signed in with a TU Dublin Office 365 account can access Microsoft Copilot from:

www.microsoft.com/copilot on any PC or mobile browser. Then sign in to your TU Dublin Office 365 account just like you would with any other account.

Once users are signed in with the account, they are redirected to copilot.cloud.microsoft to access Copilot on the web.
